NY Elevator Accident

Elevator Radio Show - Video/Audio Show #302 – Week 08/22/2012

Click Here to download ERS-2012-08-22 #302 Well it's the first day of school for my boys and if you can believe it our phone and internet was out all day yesterday which mean't they had to find alternative ways to have a good time, like exploring on their bikes and playing with the neighborhood kids. I was suprised when I got home to discover they were really okay with this and it gave me a chance to share with them my stories of when I was their age, as if kids want to hear this kind of stuff, and what I ended up doing. I can honestly say that they enjoyed not playing xbox live without there friends and realized that there's a world beyond the internet and cable tv. I wish the internet would go out more often.

Shorter show today on the content side but I did want to thank all of you who e-mailed and called with support and sympathy for our good friends and for those of you who wrote wishing I wouldn't have said anything at all I apologize. It was part of my own therapy sharing with you my feelings and it helped. I will not bring it up again and thank you for allowing me to share it. Everyone have a great week and weekend and thanks for listening/watching the show today.

If this is the kind of news week we get when I go on vacation, next time I just might reconsider.  Talk about a week full of SNAFU's that have me once again questioning a bunch of things which I’ll comment during the show today. Two articles on I swear were April fools jokes, unfortunately only one was.

In light of the response from the elevator mechanic in NY regarding the tragedy in December I will be sharing my EMI/RFI Testing experience with you so that comprehending what is being stated is understood by everyone.  I sure hope that the news source covering the article would run down the leads mentioned in the article to confirm that was the case before actually printing it.  There was also another accident in NY, this time involving a cable and an elevator dropping. Pretty serious stuff as this kind of thing is not supposed to happen. It’s getting a bit redundant and the riding public is starting to take notice. Is it too late to change? That my friends is the question. Post: January 25th, 2012: ERS-2012-01-25 #284 Show Notes

Click Here to download ERS-2012-01-24 #284 Last show of January and you know what that means….it’s our prize pack giveaway. Next week there will be no show as I will be traveling to Atlanta, GA to attend the Annual Meeting for the Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation. I’m excited about the meeting and wish I could stay longer. More information on the accident in NY has surfaced and it’s going to get a lot uglier as the DA gets involved with the investigation. I can’t say it enough, we as an industry need to make sure that training is our number one priority. Sure it’s important to learn about the code but when you get right down to it if there are people out there working on elevators and escalators who are not properly trained they are doing the job incorrectly each and every day. For states that require continuing education credits each year, make them count. It’s not enough to simply just learn about the code. Safety and understanding what can happen if the job is not done correctly is just as important. No one knows it all and each day we all need to learn something new.

Special thanks to the companies who have donated goodies to it!

Back to work after a great week in New Orleans at the NAEC Convention!  It was truly an honor and pleasure to see so many of you who stopped by our booth and also attended my round table session. Very insightful conversations that occurred during the three hours I was there. As expected I learned just as much from those who attended as I had to share. I’ve got a complete update of last week along with some good articles to share on the program today. Good to be back in Chicago, the best part of any business trip is coming home.

Elevator Segment on 20/20

I received an email from Pat Carrajat this morning that he is going to be on the last segment of 20/20 tonight.

I'm assuming that the prompted in response to the accident that happened on May 18th.  Which appears to be the result of an overloaded elevator. http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2011/05/18/passengers-injured-when-elevator-drops-three-floors-in-chelsea/

My hopes are that 20/20 does a better job than most media outlets have done in the past of covering a story like this. It can get frustrating when bits and pieces are taken out of a long interview only to serve the angle that the media is pushing.
