I'm ramping up for next week’s Elevator U Conference in Columbus, OH and looking forward to seeing many of you next week on the next stop of the conference schedule. Between the construction accidents and some children being hurt while playing on escalators it wasn’t a good week for news articles.  The EESF has just a short time to raise some much needed funds for the Safety Rider redevelopment program. It’s hard to believe that the show is approaching show number 400. In some ways it feels like it was just yesterday when we started this ride and in others it feels a lot longer. Perhaps it’s the lack of sleep that I’ve been getting every Wednesday.  The lead story for this week’s program is the verdict in which an elevator mechanic was found guilty of felony assault in a woman’s injuries. I believe it’s the second time that I’m aware of that a mechanic has been charged with this. And Boston, hang in there, the snow will melt by June! The Elevator Escalator Safety foundation rebranding committee met yesterday in Chicago yesterday and I have to say it was nice to meet and see everyone who attended.  The good news is that we’re moving towards a different direction with the program the bad news is that the plan to do so is still being formulated. This is an exciting time for the foundation and one that is a long time coming. I’ll have more to share on this process as our committee moves through it and look forward to doing so. One accident on today’s show just goes to prove that the EESF is still needed in preventing accidents from happening.

However it’s back to reality this week and it took about four days before feeling the stress of work and my immediate surroundings mainly traffic and cars, before I was back to feeling normal again. I have to admit that after talking with Tiffany about how good it felt to realize that it was possible to slow life down it was a feeling I want to remember soon.  So here’s hoping you had the chance to recharge your batteries or have an opportunity to do so really soon.

I keep saying the day there’s no shock or bad news regarding vertical transportation equipment is the day I look forward because it means we’re all doing our jobs and people are acting like idiots. Next week I should be up with my family in the Northwoods of Wisconsin enjoying a short vacation with them. I’m not sure what day I’m planning on leaving yet so there may or may not be a show. If news content is down and I leave on Wednesday I’ll most likely pass on it. We’ll see. Remember, summer is cruising along at speed of 600 mph and at an altitude of 30,000 feet so enjoy it before it’s gone.

Two articles on the show today pretty much sum it all up.  One of which involves a little boy getting his hand caught in an escalator and this is the very first time I’ve ever seen escalators and the fact that it did what it was supposed to do and stop mentioned. This is huge as in the past these accidents have been reported in a vague way that seldom leads to any type of information on how to prevent it. I can actually see grass again. I woke up to what appeared to be a winter blizzard and was shocked driving in at how heavy the snow is. I guess the last two days of above freezing temps were enough to warm the ground up, making the snow that fell, wet and slushy. After the show I get to go shovel a bit of it which I hope is the last of this season. Have you ever seen an elevator like the one in this post? The person who sent it to me simply stated, “Only In Iowa”. I can’t imagine the condition of the rest of the elevator when the inside looks like this.

From correcting me on my pronunciations, to setting me straight when my comments may not have hit the major talking points. This little thing has turned into something much larger and with a worldwide reach than I ever imagined it would become. What captivates me even more is when you reach out, comment and share your own thoughts either in email or in person.  So this year in addition to being thankful for family, friends and work I'm truly thankful for all of you who fall into both the friends and family category. I have met so many cool and caring people and I'm proud to call the elevator industry my "other" family.  Here's hoping your Turkey Day is as stress free as it can be and for those of you traveling be safe.
