Elevator Radio Show - Video/Audio Show #389 - Week 02/04/15

erschsnwWell as last week the east coast was slammed with snow we here in the Midwest were as well on Sunday, in fact it was a full out blizzard. And not the kind you get for dessert at Dairy Queen.  The storm didn’t drop as much snow as it did in Boston but still enough to make most of us pretty darn tired from trying to keep up with it as it fell.  With more snow in the forecast I’m looking forward to an early spring. For those of you in those areas impacted I imagine you’re staying home today and maybe tomorrow so relax.  Take your time shoveling/snow blowing and try not to get to upset about what you cannot control.  Try to enjoy it if you can, help a neighbor out and take it slow. Remember that the snow will be gone by June which is only five months away, I promise. News/Article Links: Mechanic killed in elevator accident OMG on this Video!!!!! escalatorAll ready to go and what I thought I had fixed last week is not this morning as I started to record the show and nothing was recorded. It has to do with the Windows update that they are so great at pushing to all their computers in the middle of the night and my mixing board. I'll spend more time this week to get it figured out and apologize that there's no show today. I again share the show notes and will talk more about them next week. In addition to re-posting the accident link in last week’s show in Indiana a small child was hurt when he went over the side of an escalator. Support the mission of the EESF.org, at this point it's our best chance of getting the word out to parents about how elevators and escalators are not toys or amusement rides and how to ride them safely. Elevator Radio Show - Video/Audio Show #386 - Week 01/14/15 (Audio/Video DOA, not available this week) CaptureThere was a terrible accident in NY this week were an elevator mechanic was killed in the hoist way.  We leave our warm beds each day heading to work with not a though that our day could turn as tragically as it did for this mechanic. I can’t say it enough but make safe work practices the number one priority of your day. I don’t care how many units you have on your route or who is yelling at you to move faster.  Experts note that you are more likely to have an accident in the surroundings that are the most familiar to you so don't get too comfortable out there.  Heading home at the end of the day to your family and making sure those you work with should be on your mind all day. Just a side note, the show with my rant did not record/output the way it needed to so no audio/video show today.

Elevator Radio Show - Video/Audio Show #385 - Week 01/07/15

Audio File Link: Elevator Radio Show - Video/Audio Show #385 - Week 01/07/15 Happy New Year! Unfortunately we’re starting 2015 on a sad note with the recent news of a 12 year old who was killed when he entered the shaft of a home elevator in Florida and was crushed to death. It’s truly frightening to imagine that his could even happen. It’s a tragic death which requires everyone's help in spreading the word regarding riding elevators and escalators safely and that they are neither toys, nor amusement rides. And while the details of the accident have not been released we encourage anyone with a home elevator to get it checked out by your local elevator company to ensure that it’s safe and the distance between the hallway doors and gate is minimized to prevent any child from accidentally getting wedged between the door and gate when the hallway door is closed. Visit http://homesafecampaign.com/ as well as http://www.eesf.org for more information regarding elevator and escalator safety. ershnyNo show today, it's winter break and my kids are helping me at work which means I get to sleep in each day to 6 am, including today! Next week we will be back to our regular scheduled programming but I wanted to take a moment to wish you all a Happy New Year.  Thanks for being a part of my audience and family.  It's awesome to have you all join me on this fun ride.

Elevator Radio Show - Video/Audio Show #384 - Week 12/24/14 Even Santa needs to take the elevator once in a while.

I’d like to wish everyone a heartfelt Merry Christmas. Thank you for the cards you’ve sent and emails wishing me good holiday cheer. As 2014 comes to a close moving into a new fresh year is something I always enjoy. I received a nice email from Brendon who is now a teenager. He remembers calling into the Santa Hotline some seven years ago. For those of you who don’t remember, when I first started the show each year between November and December I installed a “special” phone line and number that went direct to Santa’s workshop in the North pole. I was lucky enough to ask him if I could do this because C.J. Anderson & Company supplies most of the elevator equipment used at his facility. He was game and there were many children who called and left Santa a message during those months including my own. Brendon wrote; calling the Santa Hotline was something I couldn’t wait to do and sometimes I’d even call when my parents didn’t know. In fact my dad just told me that during the first year you did this I called fifty-five times in the period of two weeks. Thank you for providing that for me as a kid as it was magical. The Elevator Escalator Safety foundation rebranding committee met yesterday in Chicago yesterday and I have to say it was nice to meet and see everyone who attended.  The good news is that we’re moving towards a different direction with the program the bad news is that the plan to do so is still being formulated. This is an exciting time for the foundation and one that is a long time coming. I’ll have more to share on this process as our committee moves through it and look forward to doing so. One accident on today’s show just goes to prove that the EESF is still needed in preventing accidents from happening.

Audio Podcast: Elevator Radio Show - Video/Audio Show #380 - Week 11/19/14 ers-trkyWinter has come with a vengeance and I’m already looking forward to this weekend where temps are predicted to be in the upper 40’s, what’s wrong with me. For our listeners in NY or just East of Buffalo I’m glad that the snow you’re getting isn’t falling on Chicago.  Short show today but a couple of articles are filled with stupidness, yes I know that’s not a real word but I feel it fits the context of what I’m going to cover today. Next week there will be no show. I’m headed to the snow frozen Northwoods of Wisconsin with my family and plan on enjoying it. From my family to yours, have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving. Be back with a new show the first week of December. Oh and one more thing, if you're looking for a new sweatshirt, consider this one. I know it's a bit much for a sweatshirt but I make no money on any of the items over on our goodies store. Everything is marked up $5 if you can believe it and that same $5 goes back to the EESF. It's a win win for everyone; they get $5, you have cool gear your coworkers will wish they had.

Elevator Radio Show - Video/Audio Show #378 - Week 11/5/14 20930It’s November everyone and that means it’s the month we celebrate Thanksgiving as well as National Elevator Escalator Safety week which is next week. Download the information packets from the EESF, partake in the workplace campaign and spread the word about safety. Also Chicago was in the news this past week after it was discovered how much money was being lost because of elevators that were not inspected. Here’s an idea, perhaps adding more inspectors and raising inspection fees and investing in some software to make it easier for the inspectors might be the answer.

EESF Launches Re-branding Campaign for Safe-T Rider Program

11-4-14-1A significant gift of $10,000 has been made by Ricia Hendrick in memory of her father, William C. Sturgeon, to support the re-branding campaign for the Safe-T Rider program. Listen to the interview with Nikole Layton and Tom Sybert. Last month, EESF announced that the cornerstone education program, Safe-T Rider, that teaches children to ride elevators, escalators and moving walks safely, would be re-branded and debuted in Fall 2015. The project will include the design of a new character or characters, enhancement of the print and Internet-accessible materials and the addition of educational apps. This is a very exciting change for the Foundation, and we are looking forward to seeing how the new program will develop!

The total cost of the new program design will be $150,000. Years ago, a fund was established for the Foundation by Mr. Sturgeon, a leading pioneer in our industry, specifically for the development of new programs and the modernization of existing ones. The only stipulation is that matching funds must be raised for any amount released. For this campaign, $75,000 has been released from the fund and EESF is working to raise the additional $75,000 to begin our project.

We need your help to make this happen. Every dollar gets us closer to the $75,000 goal! To make a donation or for more information contact Nikole Gore-Layton, nikole@eesf.org or 251-479-2199. DONATE NOW

Elevator Radio Show - Video/Audio Show #377 - Week 10/29/14 erspmkThe only thing I wish about today’s show is that there were no accidents in any of the articles.  I would love it if we could get to a week where all is balanced in the inter-web space when it comes to elevators, escalators and moving walkways. It would look similar to this one, except for the elevator fall that happened at Beaver Stadium and the important message regarding riding escalators correctly.  A guy can dream can’t he?

ersbsyIt's one of those weeks where the extra time I have just isn't there and it's going to force me to get up early tomorrow morning when I should be doing the show to take care of some other business. Next week I'll be back to my normal schedule and a new show. It will even include a great short update from Nikole Layton, Associate Director of the EESF, who was nice enough to stop by to say thanks this morning. Have a safe week everyone.

Elevator Radio Show - Video/Audio Show #375 - Week 10/08/14 Yippee the internet is working again. I’m telling you, what would we do without it? Read the paper? Talk to one another in person? Make a phone call? I honestly think all of those are good things. I kept some articles from last week’s show notes just to comment on them. So if you’re seeing them again it’s for a reason and you’re not going crazy. It was nice to see everyone at the Chicago Elevator Association meeting last week, especially some friends from out of town who were in the area attending the ASME Elevator Code meetings. Special thanks go out to John Rearick, James Herrity as well as his wife Colleen who I had the pleasure of having dinner with as well as the all of those who sit on code committees to help make our industry safer. Click Here to download ERS-2014-09-24 #374 CaptureThe first article of the show today shows the importance for the elevator code and why the enforcement of it is so important. While many feel as if the code is another form of government intervention nothing could be farther from the truth. When those out there build lifting devices by themselves and install them the reality of a tragedy occurring similar to the one in Mississippi is one much closer than many realize.  Also, if you recognize the guy in the photo he’s wanted for sexually assaulting a women in an elevator.
